There’s an Elephant on My Blog – April Fool!

Happy April Fool’s Day!  Even though it’s kind of a tiny holiday, it’s always been one of my favorites.  When I was little, elephants were my April Fool’s Day joke of choice: there’s an elephant on your head, there’s an elephant behind you, etc.  You get the idea.  Comic gold, right?!?  So elephants have become the symbol of April Fool’s Day for me.  I still text my family pictures of elephants and put elephant toys here and there on April Fool’s Day.

The elephants have even become a big part of some of our most important life events which have coincidentally happened on April Fool’s Day.  April 1st is our wedding anniversary (and yes, 10 years later we are still “fools in love!”).  Much to our wedding coordinator’s dismay, I got some elephants and wedding outfits at Build A Bear and had them all dressed up and waiting as a surprise at my parents’ seats in the sanctuary at our wedding.

Last year, our first big inspection of our new still under construction house was on April 1st.  My husband was sure to take some pictures with a strategically placed toy elephant to commemorate the occasion.

Such happy and special memories on such an absurd holiday!  So have some fun today – whether or not elephants are part of your celebration.

April Card of the Month: Wedding Card

While June might be the month people traditionally think of for weddings, to me April is wedding month since that’s when we got married.  So April’s card of the month is a wedding card.

I actually used this card for a friend’s wedding shower invitation a few years ago, but it could work well as just a regular wedding card too.  It’s one of my favorites.  I started with 8 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ white card stock folded in half.  The next later was a piece of silver card stock punched with an eyelet ruffle punch on one edge.  Then I attached a square of black and white print card stock using pop up dots.  Next I put on a black scallop circle with another pop up dot.  The finishing touches were a ring sticker on top of the black scallop circle and a pretty black and clear rhinestone stickers in the lower right corner of the card.  I love this card.  I think it’s simple and elegant and perfect for any wedding.

Ball Jar Spring Flowers

I recently received a wonderful spring gift from one of my precious students.  He brought me some beautiful pink tulips in a Ball jar.  He didn’t even realize how sentimental his gift was to me!  Our wedding anniversary in in April, and our centerpieces at our wedding were Ball jars filled with spring flowers.

(And for the record – I have seen wedding centerpieces like this on Pinterest recently, but I came up with the idea on my own 9 years ago, looooong before I was on Pinterest!)  So getting the tulips in the Ball jar from my little student just a few days before our 9th anniversary was extra special!

Since using them at our wedding, Ball jars have become one of my favorite things for decorating – in fact I am planning to use them a lot in our new kitchen in our new house.  They are so versatile and look nice plain or filled with lots of different things – especially spring flowers!  Just take the round disk out of the top of the jar.  Replace it with some wire mesh that has big openings (about one fourth to one half inch squares) to keep the flowers arranged as you want them and screw the metal ring on top to hold the mesh in place.  Then get an assortment of spring flowers and put them in the jar.  Finish it off with a ribbon if you like.  Each jar is always unique, but they are always so lovely and springy.

Anniversary Cakes

This week I get to do one of my favorite tasks of the year – order our anniversary cake for our upcoming anniversary.  What is an anniversary cake?  Well, each year we get a cake to celebrate our wedding anniversary.  This might be an odd tradition, but it is special to us and we love it!

It started on our first anniversary when we thawed out and ate the top tier we had frozen after our wedding, as is tradition.  We loved our wedding cake, so we were really excited to have it again (and to suddenly have more freezer space available!).

After a year of anticipation, we found that it tasted like… stale cake that had been frozen for a year.  So, we decided to get a new one from the same bakery that would be just like our wedding cake – a layer of chocolate cake, a layer of white cake, and white icing with purple and lavender flowers.

It was much more delicious than the stale frozen one, and so a new tradition was born!

Since then we have done this every year.  It’s fun because each cake is a little different (we even ordered cupcakes one year!) but it is always special and helps us remember how wonderful our wedding day was.

When our daughter joined our family, we started adding pink flowers to the cake for her – after all, celebrating our wedding anniversary is all about celebrating the love in our little family!

We take a picture of our yearly cake and include it in our wedding anniversary picture album each year.

So if you want a new tradition for your anniversary, give cake a try!  Regardless of the time of year your anniversary occurs, it’s always nice to have an excuse to eat cake!
